How the score is built

For

  • Pocket-lint called Halo more conventional and discreet than Frame's earlier prism design.
  • The Ghost Howls found the claimed battery far longer than typical rival smart glasses, at 14 hours.
  • AR Compare liked a full-screen color microOLED HUD under $400, open source down to the firmware.
  • Vibe Mode builds small Lua apps from a spoken request, on top of the same open brilliant_sdk as Frame.
  • The camera never saves a photo: Brilliant Labs says the image becomes an irreversible data pattern.

Against

  • AR Compare noted an 8 month shipping delay, from a promised November 2025 to August 2026.
  • The price rose from a $299 preorder to $399 at general availability, per Brilliant Labs' own post.
  • Pocket-lint and The Ghost Howls both called the one-eye display strange or possibly very annoying.
  • AR Compare pointed to a small company with a history of software instability in its earlier device.
  • The VGA camera never captures a usable photo or video, unlike Frame's 720p sensor.

Halo is Brilliant Labs' second generation, announced July 2025 and shipping since August 2026 at $399, after preorders opened at $299. It swaps Frame's beamsplitter prism for a peripheral OLEDoS microdisplay, 640x480 at up to 5,000 nits, on an Alif Balletto B1 chip with an Ethos-U55 NPU, plus two bone-conduction speakers, two microphones and a VGA camera used only for on-device AI.

Pocket-lint, reviewing the announcement, called the design more conventional than Frame's and liked the color display and bone-conduction audio, while warning the image sitting outside direct sight could prove very annoying. The Ghost Howls praised the 14-hour claimed battery. After the device shipped, AR Compare still liked a full-color HUD under $400 that stays open source down to the firmware, running the same brilliant_sdk that covers Frame.

The same reviews found real friction. AR Compare logged an eight-month shipping delay and a price that rose from the $299 preorder to $399, and pointed to Brilliant Labs' history of software instability. Pocket-lint and The Ghost Howls both called viewing with one eye strange, and Brilliant Labs' own design means the camera never produces a usable photo, unlike Frame's 720p sensor.

Halo fits someone who wants Frame's open hardware without its visible prism, not someone who wants to take a picture with their glasses or a settled software track record.

Verdict

Halo replaces Frame's prism with a peripheral OLEDoS projector and a claimed 14 hour battery. AR Compare still flagged an 8 month shipping delay and a price that rose from $299 to $399. It fits someone who wants open hardware without the prism, not someone wanting a settled launch or a photo-saving camera.
