Neither Google nor Samsung had disclosed an official price as of 2026-09-05; Samsung executives said only that they are targeting a 'reasonable' level within the premium segment (reported by Android Central/9to5google, 2026-07-27). Independent outlets sourcing supply-chain leaks under the codename 'Jinju' (SamMobile, Smartprix, Geeky Gadgets, Dymesty) estimate USD 379-499 for the 2026 audio-only generation; that range is not an official price and priceUsd is left null accordingly.

Our review

For

  • Google's Jetpack XR SDK is open to any Android Studio developer, per its own developer docs.
  • TechCrunch called the live translation and turn-by-turn navigation genuinely useful.
  • A physical privacy toggle and a bystander LED are a checkable safeguard, per VR.org.
  • Samsung declares up to nine hours of active use plus about seven case recharges.

Against

  • No price, exact ship date or availability was confirmed as of September 2026, per VR.org.
  • Apps run on the phone, not on the glasses: Google's own SDK docs call this a projected activity.
  • TechCrunch judged the audio alone not good enough to replace headphones for music.
  • VR.org found the demo units felt cheap and scratch-prone, and could not be worn to test.
  • Camera resolution, weight and an IP rating for the retail unit went undisclosed, per VR.org.

Android XR Audio Glasses is Google's reference design for the display-free tier of Android XR, unveiled at Google I/O on 19 May 2026 and detailed at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked on 22 July 2026, where Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker showed the first hardware built on it. The glasses pair with a phone over Bluetooth and use a 12MP camera, microphones and open-ear speakers to surface Gemini for voice queries, translation, navigation and notifications.

Can a developer write an app for it? Partly. Google's Jetpack XR SDK is open to any Android Studio developer, and this audio-glasses category opened before any hardware had been shown publicly. But the app runs as a projected activity on the paired phone, not installed on the glasses, and reaches the wearer only as audio, distributed through Google Play rather than sideloaded onto the eyewear.

TechCrunch's hands-on found promise in live translation and turn-by-turn navigation, but judged the audio alone insufficient for music. VR.org was blunter: three months from launch, Samsung had disclosed no price, ship date, camera resolution, IP rating or weight, and the demo units felt cheap and scratch-prone.

With no confirmed price and no ship date beyond fall 2026 in select markets, this fits only someone willing to wait through a launch Google and Samsung have not finished describing.

Verdict

Android XR Audio Glasses is Google's open-SDK reference design for audio-only smart glasses; VR.org found Samsung had disclosed no price, weight or ship date for the retail hardware. It suits a developer curious about Android XR now, not a buyer waiting to try the glasses.
