Our review

For

  • An open, Android-based SDK with Unity, Unreal, OpenXR and WebXR support, per Magic Leap's own docs.
  • Magic Leap declares a 70-degree field of view, which Engadget and Road to VR both called a major jump.
  • Dynamic Dimming darkens the real world to about 20 to 2,000 nits, which VRX called a real strength.
  • VRX called the 260 g headset light given its display power.
  • A first-party prescription insert, USD 149, fits custom lenses onto the headset.

Against

  • VRX said the headset needs a separate Compute Pack tethered by cable.
  • Prices ran from USD 3,299 to USD 4,999, which Engadget called out of reach for consumers.
  • Magic Leap claims only 3.5 hours of battery from the Compute Pack.

Magic Leap 2 is an enterprise AR headset from Magic Leap Inc., launched September 30, 2022, with a 70-degree field of view and 1440x1760-per-eye waveguide displays. Dynamic Dimming darkens the real world to about 20-2,000 nits. A tethered Compute Pack packs an AMD Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, wired to a 260 g headset running Android AOSP.

Magic Leap publishes a developer portal with native Unity, Unreal, OpenXR and WebXR support, plus raw Android access in C/C++, Java and Kotlin, and a desktop Hub app for deployment. Base carries no commercial-deployment rights; Developer Pro and Enterprise add that.

Three reviews converge on real strengths and costs. Engadget called the AR presence a genuine technical leap, questioning Magic Leap's unproven enterprise pivot. Road to VR praised the field and tracking but saw motion blur and color-fringing. VRX called it the most capable premium AR headset for enterprise use, flagging the tethered pack, limited app ecosystem, and manual environment remapping each use.

Magic Leap priced three editions, Base at USD 3,299, Developer Pro at USD 4,099 and Enterprise at USD 4,999, never sold in China or Brazil. Per its Terms of Sale, direct sales ended March 31, 2026; resellers could deliver existing stock through 2026, with support through 2027. A prescription insert costs USD 149.

Verdict

Magic Leap 2 answers the developer question better than most: an open, Android-based SDK with Unity, Unreal, OpenXR and WebXR support. Engadget called its AR presence a genuine technical leap but its USD 3,299 to USD 4,999 price out of reach for consumers; direct sales ended March 31, 2026. It suits an enterprise developer, not a new individual buyer.
