Our review

For

  • RayNeo's own spec sheet documents installing an APK over ADB, so your build runs on the glasses
  • UploadVR rated outdoor visibility well at the up to 1,000 nits RayNeo publishes
  • Android Authority praised the live translation overlay and the mapping navigation at CES 2023
  • RayNeo lists a Snapdragon XR2 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage doing the work onboard

Against

  • UploadVR measured 1 to 2 hours with the display on, and RayNeo never published a battery-life figure
  • No public SDK for the X2: XDA Developers found only a phone app with a few built-in games
  • Discontinued. The official store shows $499 Sold Out and the JD listing in China is reported delisted
  • UploadVR calls the 25 degree field tiny, the tracking poor and the touchpad and ring clunky
  • XDA ruled it out on price, and Android Authority saw nothing that justifies it over a phone

The RayNeo X2 is a standalone pair of AR glasses with binocular full-color Micro-LED waveguide displays, a Snapdragon XR2 and a 16 MP camera, per RayNeo's spec sheet; UploadVR gives 119 g. It went on retail sale in China on 2023-10-31 at CNY 4,999, and reached the rest of the world through the Indiegogo campaign RayNeo announced on 2024-02-27.

Both full reviews stop short of recommending it. UploadVR measured a 25 degree field of view and 640x480 pixels per eye, two numbers RayNeo does not publish, and got 1 to 2 hours with the display on against about 5 hours audio only. XDA Developers liked the 16 MP camera and the assistant, still ruled it out on price and crowdfunding-only availability, and called it bulky and odd-looking, as Android Authority did. Android Authority, hands-on at CES 2023, praised the translation overlay and the navigation and questioned its advantage over a phone.

For a developer the X2 is a sideload target and little else. RayNeo's own spec sheet documents installing an APK over ADB, so a build of yours runs on the glasses, and that is the whole channel: no published SDK for this model, and XDA found no app store on it. The Innovator Program RayNeo advertises is a rewards scheme for verified owners.

It is not for anyone who needs to buy one today: $499 marked Sold Out on the official store, and the China listing reported delisted.

Verdict

UploadVR and XDA Developers both reviewed it and neither recommended it. UploadVR measured a 25 degree field, 640x480 per eye and 1 to 2 hours with the display on. RayNeo's store lists it at US$ 499, Sold Out. It is a sideload target for whoever already owns one, not a device to buy.
