How the score is built

For

  • fdaytalk says the 120Hz, 600 nit Micro-OLED panels double the brightness of the first NXTWear S.
  • TVsBook measured a screen equivalent to 215 inches from six meters, on dual 1920x1080 panels.
  • TCL ships the 87 gram frame with a myopia lens included, and Lensology sells custom inserts for £79.
  • Forbes says the glasses form factor is far more natural to wear than a bulkier headset.
  • fdaytalk praises Whisper Mode for cutting the open-ear speakers' sound leakage.

Against

  • TCL never published a third-party SDK: it is a passive external monitor, not an app platform.
  • Forbes found no gesture controls, no app store, and no camera tracking movement at all.
  • fdaytalk reports heat building up around the nose bridge during use.
  • Target's own listing confirms no internal battery: power draws nonstop from the host over USB-C.
  • Focus Camera and Target both listed the NXTWear S+ as out of stock on September 6, 2026.

The TCL NXTWear S+ is a tethered pair of display glasses, not standalone AR: it plugs into a USB-C DisplayPort phone, laptop, or console to project a private screen from dual 1920x1080 Sony Micro-OLED panels, up to 120Hz and 600 nits, at a 49 degree field of view. It weighs 87 grams, ships with a myopia lens frame, and has no camera and no battery.

fdaytalk called the S+ a significant upgrade over the original NXTWear S, doubling refresh rate to 120Hz and brightness to 600 nits, and praised Whisper Mode for cutting speaker leakage; TVsBook measured the panels as equivalent to a 215 inch screen from six meters. Forbes was more torn: it liked the glasses form factor but doubted daily use once the novelty fades.

For the question this site exists to answer, the answer is no. TCL never opened a third-party SDK: Forbes found no gesture controls, no app store, and no camera tracking movement, and the glasses work only as a passive monitor, with the Android TCL AR app limited to multi-window and 3D modes. There is no SoC or OS of its own to build an app for.

TCL launched the S+ in February 2024 at $399, and by September 2026 US prices had dropped to $259.99 at Focus Camera and $249.99 at Target, though both listed it out of stock. fdaytalk also reported heat around the nose bridge, and power draws continuously over USB-C, so battery life is the host device problem, not the glasses.

Verdict

TCL's NXTWear S+ is not standalone AR: it has no camera, no battery, and no third-party SDK, working only as a wired 1920x1080 external screen for a phone, laptop, or console. Forbes, fdaytalk, and TVsBook all liked the 120Hz Micro-OLED image, but flagged heat at the nose bridge and units now showing as out of stock.
