- Geeky Gadgets called the 240Hz micro-OLED image sharp and vibrant for gaming.
- At 91 grams it stayed comfortable through five-hour sessions, Geeky Gadgets found.
- Ifanr liked switching between a PS5, a Switch, an Xbox and a PC without unplugging.
Against
- Geeky Gadgets found text nearly unreadable, ruling out coding or document work.
- IGN said the US$849 price effectively forces buying the dock, whose preset toggle failed.
- IGN reported the 240Hz mode causes flicker that strains the eyes.
- It has no battery or OS: a PC, phone or ROG Ally must power it the whole time.
ASUS ROG and Xreal declare the R1 a tethered gaming display: two 0.55-inch Sony micro-OLED panels at 1920x1080 per eye, up to 240Hz, a 57-degree field of view and 700 nits, at 91 grams with no battery or OS. Power and video arrive over USB-C from a PC, phone or the bundled ROG Control Dock, so a host device must travel with the glasses.
Xreal runs a public developer program at developer.xreal.com, whose SDK 3.0 adds spatial anchors, hand tracking and depth-mesh support for Unity's XRI and AR Foundation. Developers can build apps that render through the R1, but only as host-side software: it has no on-glasses app store, since the R1 carries no processor to run one.
Geeky Gadgets called the panels sharp and vibrant for high-refresh gaming, comfortable through five-hour sessions with a Steam Deck or laptop. Ifanr, reviewing the China launch, liked switching between a PS5, a Switch, an Xbox and a PC without unplugging, plus the electrochromic dimming lenses.
Both outlets flagged the same limits: Geeky Gadgets found text nearly unreadable for coding or documents, and ifanr said the weight tires the neck on long sessions, comfortable only reclined. IGN said the US$849 price effectively forces buying a dock whose preset toggle does not work, and that 240Hz mode brings flicker that strains the eyes. As of 2026-09-06, Xreal's store still listed it sold out, batch pushed to September.
Verdict
The ROG XREAL R1 is a tethered display, not a computer: Xreal's SDK lets developers build Unity and AR Foundation apps that run through a PC or a phone, but the glasses hold no app of their own. Geeky Gadgets called it sharp for gaming and unreadable for text.
