75 civil-liberties groups urge Meta to drop facial recognition plans for smart glasses

The ACLU, ACLU of Massachusetts, the New York Civil Liberties Union and dozens of other organizations sent a letter, reported April 15, 2026, demanding Meta 'immediately halt and publicly disavow' reported plans to add a facial recognition feature, internally called 'Name Tag,' to its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. The 75-organization coalition warned the feature would let wearers identify strangers by name in real time and link them to sensitive personal data, and asked Meta to disclose any past contact with ICE or CBP about the technology.
