Our review
For
- Skarredghost called it easy to develop for, using standard Android Studio, not a legacy SDK.
- VRX called it the only smart glasses with native Google Meet support.
- IP53 dust and splash resistance suits industrial settings, confirmed by Google's own specs.
- Google's own specs put it at 46g; VRX called it cheaper than RealWear or Vuzix rivals.
Against
- Discontinued since March 2023: Google no longer sells it, only resellers and used units remain.
- Skarredghost and VRX both said it can't be worn over regular prescription glasses without a frame swap.
- VRX and Unbound XR both said it targets developers and enterprises, not everyday consumers.
- Skarredghost found visible noise in low light; VRX called the 8MP camera only adequate, not competitive.
- Skarredghost found real battery life fell short of the claim; VRX called the battery non-swappable.
Glass Enterprise Edition 2 was Google's second-generation monocular smart glasses for industrial and field-service work, launched 20 May 2019 at US$999 for the Glass Pod alone, with a Snapdragon XR1 chip, an 8MP camera and a 640x360 full-color prism display above the right eye. Google stopped selling it on 15 March 2023 and closed developer support later that year, ending the Glass line entirely.
Can a developer write an app for it? Yes, with the standard Android SDK, not the old Glass Explorer Edition's GDK. There is no Play Store on the device: apps are built as ordinary Android apps, obtained as an APK from a Glass Enterprise solution provider, and sideloaded through ADB or the Android Flash Station web tool with the device in USB debug mode.
Independent reviews disagreed on how well that paid off. VRX by VR Expert liked the Snapdragon XR1 power, native Google Meet support and a price below RealWear or Vuzix rivals, but called the native app catalog thin. Skarredghost found the display clear indoors but a real source of eye strain over long sessions, and Unbound XR credited it with rebuilding Google's credibility in enterprise AR after the original Glass failed as a consumer product.
Google's own sales channel is gone: buying one today means a reseller or a used unit, with no manufacturer support and a device several Android generations behind.
Verdict
Glass Enterprise Edition 2 paired a standard Android SDK, sideloaded via ADB, with a monocular display Skarredghost called decent for short tasks but a real source of eye strain over long use. Google discontinued it in 2023: it suits a buyer who needs a used unit for brief scans, not one who wears it all shift.
