Augmented reality that pays for itself
Not the floating hologram of the ads. The AR that already earns money is a line of text or an arrow put where the eye already was, and the numbers below come from the companies that deployed it.
Augmented reality on glasses sells badly because it is sold wrong. The demo shows a hologram spinning in a living room; the deployments that pay show a number, an arrow or an outline placed exactly where the person was already looking, so they do not have to look away.
The clearest evidence is industrial. Clorox put Vuzix M400 glasses on plant floors so a quarterly audit could happen without flying the auditor in, and reported a 20 percent cut in machine downtime, with one remote support call saving about two hours of stopped production. A logistics operator equipped warehouse staff for receiving, put-away, picking and packing and reported double digit gains on each step. Neither case is about immersion. Both are about keeping two hands free and the eyes on the work.
In surgery the argument is sharper still. A neurosurgeon at UConn Health has done more than 500 procedures with a headset that projects the patient's own spine anatomy into his field of view while he places pedicular screws, and the maker counts more than 10,000 cases across US hospitals. The value is not the 3D. It is not turning your head to a monitor while your hands are inside someone.
Consumer AR is thinner, and honest about it
On the consumer side the useful cases are navigation and notification. A reviewer scored the Even Realities G1 at 78 out of 100 and called turn by turn navigation the standout, while noting you still have to open the phone to set the destination and you can only dismiss a message, not answer it. An open source lens for the Snap Spectacles builds turn by turn AR navigation on the glasses' own GPS and the Google Maps API, and Brilliant Labs shipped an open hardware and firmware pair of glasses so developers can run their own code on the lens.
The camera is the whole argument against
The same camera that makes AR possible is what regulators are moving against. France's CNIL warned in May 2026 that connected glasses risk normalising surveillance that is "almost invisible and omnipresent", and its own research found 67 percent of French adults see smart glasses as a privacy risk. The European Data Protection Board commissioned a report on the social acceptability of smart glasses. Chinese public security bureaus, meanwhile, have used AR glasses to photograph a face in the street and match it against the national identity database since 2018. Any AR product built now is built inside that argument.
