The lesson is the point of view

Nine schools, from a bricklaying workshop in Krefeld to a deaf school in Nanjing, put the camera or the caption where the student's eyes already are. What changes is not the content, it is who gets to see the hands.

A practical demonstration has always had the same defect: the class stands around the instructor and sees the work from the wrong angle, from behind, from the side, never from where the hands are. Nine cases in this file attack that one problem, and they split into three shapes.

Shape one: the instructor's eyes, on loan

A culinary school in Kyoto put the glasses on the instructor so students could watch nerikiri, Japanese decorative confectionery, from the instructor's own viewpoint, then reversed it and put them on the student so the instructor could coach the hands he was watching. The sister school did the same with latte art. Neither published a score, and we say so.

Assessment is the same trick with a different purpose. City of Bristol College ran nearly 40 practical vehicle-technician assessments through a headset in the first months of a twelve-month trial, against a normal load of up to 430 a year, with the assessor watching the student's own point of view. Martec Training, in the same national trial, used it with students who have special educational needs, so the demonstration could be replayed at each student's own pace with both hands still free for the tools.

Shape two: the model laid over the object

German supplementary apprenticeship training went further. In the ARUB project, bricklayer apprentices in Krefeld compared a dry-laid course of bricks, layer by layer, against a projected digital twin, and saw the deviation instead of being told about it. The honest part of that report is the part that failed: the team wrote that the HoloLens interface was not self-explanatory, and switched to simpler 3D scanners for teaching the scanning skill itself. The ARihA project in Schweinfurt built the same idea for electric vehicles, where each step appears at the point on the car where the step is performed.

Shape three: the caption is the access

The Nanjing School for the Deaf put 60 sets of AR captioning glasses on grade 10 and 11 students and turned the teacher's speech into subtitles across history, geography and biology. Staff and students reported a better grasp of written language and of lesson content that used to go past them. No test scores were published, and that is the whole claim.

The oldest case here is also the smallest: a physics teacher wearing Google Glass inside the Large Hadron Collider tunnel, streaming a first-person lesson to his class in Michigan. One teacher, one tunnel, one class, and the point stands.
