For
- UploadVR called the Neural Band gesture recognition flawless.
- Since 2026-05-14 outside apps can draw on the lens, by native SDK or Web App.
- Tom's Guide found the screen bright and colourful and the gestures dependable.
- UploadVR praised photo and video capture with a live preview inside the lens.
- UploadVR found the live translation, in four languages, and the captions strong.
Against
- UploadVR says the monocular display strains the eyes and limits video calls.
- Tom's Guide gave 3 of 5 for half-baked maps; UploadVR saw navigation in few cities.
- Karl Guttag puts the effective resolution near 400x400 on a 600x600 panel.
- Android Authority calls the US$799 flagship-phone money, and correction adds US$200.
- Display access still needs Meta's approval, there is no storefront, and CNBC reports US-only sales.
The screen sits in the right lens alone: 600x600 pixels in full colour, about 20 degrees, declared at up to 5,000 nits, on a 69 g frame with a 12-megapixel camera and 32 GB. Teardowns by iFixit, Notebookcheck and TechInsights all read the chip as a Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1. The US$799 includes the Neural Band wristband, whose gestures UploadVR called flawless.
The developer answer changed midway through this product's life. In November 2025 UploadVR documented that only Meta could put an image on the display. On 2026-05-14 Meta opened it: a native iOS and Android SDK that extends a phone app onto the lens, and Web Apps in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, both able to draw text, image, button and video and to read the Neural Band gestures. It is still a preview. VR.org calls the access gated rather than universal, there is no public storefront, and a discussion in Meta's own iOS repository reports approval case by case.
The complaints are consistent. Tom's Guide gave 3 out of 5 and called the maps half-baked. UploadVR reports eye strain from the single-eye image, Bluetooth slow enough to hurt apps and navigation limited to a few cities. Karl Guttag puts the effective resolution near 400x400.
With correction the package is US$999, bonded at manufacture in 5 to 8 weeks. CNBC reported the rollout to other countries paused in January 2026, and there is no sale in Brazil or China.
Verdict
Meta's pair with a screen: 600x600 in the right lens alone, 69 g, US$799 with the Neural Band. On 2026-05-14 Meta opened the display to outside developers, still a preview approved app by app, and the sale is US only. For a developer there it is the one Meta screen to write for; for anyone outside, it is not on sale.
