The Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1) has been on sale since October 2023 at US$299, with a 12 MP camera for 1080p clips up to 60 seconds, five microphones, open-ear speakers and IPX4 water resistance on a Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip. Meta and The Verge note more than 150 prescription frame, lens and color combinations.
Three reviews welcomed the hardware. Moor Insights and Strategy called the camera and chip jump the biggest the category had seen. The Verge liked the 150-plus styles that still read as ordinary Ray-Bans. Engadget measured the speakers 50% louder than before, with directional recording good enough for livestreaming.
Can someone build an app for it? Only through Meta. Its September 2025 Wearables Device Access Toolkit, in developer preview, first let outside apps reach the camera and mic, but general publishing stays limited to select partners until a broader opening promised for 2026.
Moor Insights measured about 3 hours of standalone battery before the case. The Verge found the voice assistant slow and the privacy LED too subtle. Engadget noted every AI feature stays locked inside Meta's own apps: Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger.
Verdict
The Verge, Engadget and Moor Insights and Strategy all praised the 2023 Ray-Ban Meta's camera, audio and design, though two measured about three hours of standalone battery. It suits buyers who want a stylish, Meta-locked camera pair now, not developers wanting open access or all-day battery life.
